Kindergartners Have Rhythm!

2/9/2015

The kindergartners have been working on clapping simple rhythms using familiar words.  They learned that the work 'pizza' has two syllables or two sounds.  'Pan' has one syllable or one sound.  They worked on creating patterns using these two words and shared them with the class.  Soon, they will connect these rhythms to eighth notes and quarter notes.  In the picture below, you'll see some kindergartners sharing a rhythm they created with the class!

2nd and 3rd Graders Compose!

1/23/2015

Over the past few classes, the second and third graders have been composing a song with a group!  They first learned about musical form, or the way a piece of music is set up.  We danced to a song called "Caimarusa" and discovered this song is in AB form, which means it has two main themes that alternate back and forth.  After that, in groups, the students composed two different rhythms, added solfege to the rhythms, and wrote the notes on a musical staff.  The next step is to bring their music to life and sing or play it on the instruments!

3rd Graders Dance!

10/28/2014

Students in third grade recently learned the Russian dance, "Sasha."  In addition to learning some new dance moves, they were able to further internalize steady beat, understand musical form, and learn to count to three in Russian!  Raz, dva, tre!  We had a great time switching partners and moving around the room in this high energy dance! Hey!
